Academic Excellence
The SJS Kindergarten classroom revolves around Small Group Centers, where your child progresses based on individual readiness for each subject. Emphasis is placed on early reading and comprehension through the following programs:
- Jolly Phonics, a nationally recognized phonics program that has proven beneficial for all levels of readers, encouraging early readers to continue to excel and help more readers achieve success.
- Heggerty Phonemic Awareness, a program that provides a concrete connection between letters and sounds. Children isolate, manipulate, blend, and segment sounds into spoken and written words.
- Guided Reading, which uses self-directed reading, shared reading, writing, and working with words.
- Six-Trait Writing, which teaches writing components including ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions.
The Kindergarten curriculum also includes math, religion, science, social studies, music, art, and P.E. There are weekly visits to the computer lab, library, and music class. Children also have snacks, recess, games, rest time, and fun group outings and activities!
In addition to traditional teaching techniques, our classrooms have a shared SMART Table, an interactive technology tool that allows students to touch and move graphics on the table, sorting sounds and grouping shapes, colors and animals. The Table is used with the Jolly Phonics reading program and for science projects.
Christian Values in a Nurturing Environment
Our Catholic faith is at the heart of everything we do. Every Kindergartner attends weekly Mass and participates in daily prayer. St. James Parish priests visit the classroom regularly and the children visit the school chapel for instruction. Each Kindergartner has a 6th grade prayer buddy who meets with them throughout the year.

Every day, parents volunteer at school and in the classrooms. We invite you to tour the school or attend an all-school Mass to witness the many ways SJS connects with families within our school community.
Kindergarten Program Options:
St. James offer several class options to fit families’ busy lifestyles, along with before and after school care each day.
- Half-day Morning Program: Monday-Friday 8:45-11:30
- Half-day Morning with Afternoon Extension: Monday-Friday 8:45-11:30, with the option to stay until 3:35 on Monday/Wednesday/Friday. Parents can choose days for the extension each month to provide flexibility.
- Full-day Program: Monday-Friday 8:45-3:35
