Co-Curricular Activities
SJS also offers a substantial selection of co-curricular activities that are run by various school staff members and school parents.
Academic Bowl
Upper-level students participate in this annual general knowledge competition with students from local schools. Questions include areas of science, mathematics, technology, political science and language arts.
After School Clubs
Parent volunteers actively support a variety of activities for upper-level students in weekly after-school clubs. Some activities include cartooning, environmental awareness, money decisions, and sewing.
Ambassadors Club
Upper-level students show their knowledge and love of St. James School by giving informative school tours. Visitors are impressed with their strong interpersonal skills.
Artist Awareness
Students are introduced to a different artist each month. Parent volunteers present a brief history of a particular artist and show four samples of the artist's work.
Band
Students in 4th through 8th grade are invited to learn an instrument and play in one of the three SJS bands. The bands also participate in concerts, competitions, and the Memorial Day Parade.
Bible Study
Upper grade level students meet one morning a week before school to pray, sing, study, and discuss Scripture.
Broadway Bulldogs
Upper-level students produce a spring musical each year. Past productions have included Aladdin Jr., Guys and Dolls Jr., and Annie, Jr.
Bulldog Press
Bulldog Press turns a student's creative story into a professionally bound book for the student to illustrate.
Choir
Students in 2nd through 8th grades meet weekly in their age groups to sing, pray, and learn liturgical music to accompany the St. James parish liturgies.
Cultural Arts
Twice each year, the SJS Parents' Club provides a cultural experience to enrich students' classroom activities.
G.E.M.S. (Going that Extra Mile for Service)
All students in this club are invited to follow the example of Jesus in performing acts of service for others.
National Geographic Geography Bee
Upper-level geography students compete locally. Winners move on to regional and national levels.
National Junior Honor Society
7th and 8th grade students who meet academic, service and character criteria are eligible for this national society.
National Spelling Bee
Upper-level students compete locally with winners moving on to regional and national levels in this spelling competition.
School Reporters
Middle and Upper-level students can report on school news for the St. James Parish bulletin.
Scouts
Scouting for boys is available from 1st through 8th grade and for girls from kindergarten through 8th grade.
Student Council
Upper-level students are elected as officers and representatives to this student governing body. Student Council provides a student voice in both formal and informal school activities including clubs, dances, school presentations, and school regulations.
Tech Club
Upper-level students provide technology support to students and teachers by helping with homework and presentations. Students also keep the SJS website updated.
Variety Show
The SJS Variety Show is held every January during Catholic Schools Week and features the talents of St. James students.
Yearbook
Upper-level students determine the yearbook theme as well as features to be included in the SJS Yearbook. Students work as editors, photographers, and layout designers.
