SJS Band and Middle School Chorus at ILMEA Music Festival

Congratulations to SJS musicians who recently participated in the ILMEA Music Festival!  Billy Beck auditioned and made it into the Junior Band playing trumpet! We had several singers join the Junior Chorus as well: Abigail Beck, Gianna Bentz, Aidan McLeod, Finn McLeod, Fernanda Romero, Marygrace Townsend, Ella Venegas.

The Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) is the Illinois chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) and one of the largest fine arts organizations in Illinois. ILMEA is a non-profit organization dedicated to “promote lifelong music learning and to provide leadership for music education”. ILMEA promotes and supports music as a vital component in the complete education of every child, provides professional growth opportunities for music educators, and sponsors and organizes performance festival opportunities for student musicians of Illinois.

Seasoned directors are chosen to direct the bands, chorus and orchestra. It is an amazing experience to observe their rehearsal strategies and techniques with our young musicians. St. James School is in District 7, the most competitive District of Illinois.

SJS has had student musicians audition and participate in ILMEA since 2009 in Jazz Band, and Jr. Band and since 2016 for Jr. Chorus. Band and Jazz Band participation is by audition only. Over 500 musicians prepare approximately 14 pages of music, but only 100 are selected for Band, and 60 for the Jazz Bands. Jr. Chorus and Elementary Chorus are non-audition. All musicians prepared music, attended rehearsals and participated in a Festival concert on Saturday, November 3, representing our school. We are proud of the extraordinary efforts they made in developing their gift of music. Mrs. McDermott and Miss Winter are committed to working together to offer opportunities that bring out your children’s gift of music through school and community events.

“The gift of music is similar to the gift of faith and parallels the parable of the mustard seed. Music can grow throughout a person’s lifetime to unlimited potential. The beauty of this gift is when you and those around you can experience faith through music.”
