FROM THE DESK OF MRS. FARRELL, Director of Spiritual Formation
As we begin a new year at St. James School, it is important to realize that the core reason our school and our parish exist is “To be disciples of Christ and make disciples of Christ.” (Parish mission statement, 2018).
So what does this mean to our students and our families? Being a disciple means that we are first and foremost aware of and committed to growing and ever deepening our relationship with Christ. That is the reason we open our doors every morning and that is the reason you send your children here every day.
We find the roots of discipleship in Christ in the New Testament and the Acts of the Apostles. In the Gospel of John, Christ clearly defines discipleship with this statement: “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13: 34-35).
So in order for us as parents, faculty, and staff to truly educate your children, we must be conscious of and always live in relationship to Christ ourselves. In short, we cannot make disciples if we are not disciples ourselves.
So one of the initiatives of the Family and School Association, this year, is to support our parents through our new Faith Formation Committee. This committee is planning a few events throughout the year “…to help parents grow in their personal faith so that they can pass the love of Christ onto their children.” (Christi Marcheschi, planning committee member). More information will be forthcoming on these events.
And as you may have seen over the last several days, our students and some parents have “measured themselves” against our “Growing Disciples” yardstick. We cannot wait to see how much we all grow over this year! (thanks to Grace Sullivan, planning committee member and her husband, Sean Smith, for constructing these yardsticks).
So we have many exciting opportunities for all of us deepen our relationship with Christ- everyday!
