OLD PALMS      With Lent starting Wednesday, February 14, we need to dispose of the palms we received last Palm Sunday. Families are invited to bring in  OLD palms when they come to Mass or to school through March18. Please transport old palms in a bag rather than loose. St. James will burn all palms received. Some of the ashes will be used on Ash Wednesday.

All are welcome to join the students and staff at the all school Mass on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 2:00. You can find more information additional Ash Wednesday Masses and Lent at St. James in this newsletter.

In case you were wondering, “Ash Wednesday Trumps Valentine’s Day” . Fasting and abstinence will apply on Ash Wednesday despite the fact that it falls on Valentines’ Day. Catholics 18-59 are required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.  Catholics 14 and older are also required to abstain from meat on those days, and on Lenten Fridays.  In other words, a person fasting “is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal.

HOUSEHOLDS OF FAITH

It has been a busy, faith-filled time at Saint James, especially since the first of the year. We had a great retreat for our 7th grade, which I mentioned previously, and last week, of course, we celebrated Catholic Schools Week. This week has included a talk to the Brownies who are candidates for their “My Faith, My Promise” pin. READ MORE.

THE COUNSELOR’S CORNER

We all know how important it is for our children to be readers. Sometimes children need coaxing to do independent reading and see it as a fun and profitable pastime. I came across the following article which sheds light on some important tips on how to encourage your child to be a reader.

If your child doesn’t read very much and maybe struggles to read, it’s important that you support your child’s reading at home. But, as you’ve probably found out, just nagging your kid to read doesn’t do much good. It might even make things worse. READ MORE

Our next Parents’ Club meeting is FEBRUARY 20 @ 2:00 pm in the O’Brien Room. Please note we have changed the time of the February meeting to 2:00 pm. Our evening social meeting will instead be held on April 17 @ 7:00 pm.

Did you know… way back in 2001 our magazine drive fundraiser brought in a profit of $27,000?!?  Yes.  Really!  Next week you will receive the magazine drive fundraising packet in your oldest or only child’s backpack.  Unlike years past, there is no assembly for the students to ramp up their excitement; however, there are still prizes available as listed on the packet envelope.  Due dates for postcards and orders are as listed on the letter stapled to the envelope.   As with all Parents’ Club fundraisers, your support is voluntary. Last year we profited $3,500 from the magazine drive.  While still a significant profit, what a difference from 2001!  The Parents’ Club board is currently evaluating our fundraising calendar and wants to know what you think. Keep an eye out for our short survey which will be available in the coming weeks.  Thank you for your continued support of Parents’ Club sponsored fundraisers and activities!
