FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Congratulations to the 2018 Christian Spirit Award winners, Victoria Gauza and Michael Cassady, and the SJS Hearts of the School, Mrs. Julie Baker and Mrs. Diane Westerkamp, our Health Office Nurses! We’re proud of you and thank you for all you do as role models for the students and staff at St. James School!

Great joy was visible as time after Mass brought STUDENTS IN SERVICE. Various projects were underway throughout the building as boys, girls, and staff participated in tasks to benefit sick children at Lurie’s Hospital, St. James PADS guests, and veterans’ organizations.

Students and staff showed great pride and spirit in their roles as students and teachers in a Catholic school this week. We greatly appreciate the help of the Marketing Committee led by Beth ZImmerman, School Council, parent and student volunteer tour guides who assisted with our most successful Open House! Particular thanks to the Parents’ Club for organizing the Variety Show, providing the Scholastic Book Fair and the special treats throughout the week. Students were inspired Matt Wilhelm, the Cultural Arts presenter, who delivered a great message on perseverance, kindness, and resilience! We are grateful to the various committees and all of the volunteers for the week and all of their assistance in providing a memorable CSW celebration for our students!

SJS families once again responded to those in need! Our giving tree activity for St. Mary Star of the Sea School in Key West, Florida was outstanding! Students’ generosity netted $1,192.28 to help St. Mary recover after grave damage due to Hurricane Irma back in September. The Bulldog Bucks with students’ prayers and good wishes will be sent to the St. Mary next week.

Remember that SJS now has online registration! Families can click here to access the online form. Paper forms are also available with pdfs listed at the same link. Online payment of registration fees can be made through Faith Direct will accept payment of fees for online registration or personal check delivered to the school office.

Special thanks to Kevin Dillon for getting the new online registration up for SJS and Denise Harter for getting the iPads ready for on the spot registration at Open House!

THANK YOU from MARILLAC HOUSE  – Back in December many SJS & RE families donated toys and games to the Marillac St. Vincent Christmas store. Here is their response to your generosity!

Congratulations to Isabel Klimowicz and Natalia Ayala who were named Regional Winners in the 2017-18 Illinois Economic Concepts Poster Contest!  All SJS seventh grade students participated in the competition as part of their Social Studies class and created an example of one of four economic concepts through a piece of original artwork.  Over 300 students participated in the regional competition and the regional winners’ drawings have been submitted to Econ Illinois for judging in a state-wide competition. At the state level, twelve winners will be selected and the winning drawings will be featured in a 2018-19 school-year calendar. Good luck to all!

OLD PALMS  With Lent starting Wednesday, February 14, we need to dispose of the palms we received last Palm Sunday. Families are invited to bring in  OLD palms when they come to Mass or to school. Please transport old palms in a bag rather than loose. St. James will burn all palms received. Some of the ashes will be used on Ash Wednesday.

The Daddy Daughter Dance committee would like to extend our gratitude to the 133 St. James Families that attended the 1st Annual Daddy Daughter Dance. We would also like to send a special thank you to a few important people:   Pamela Kelly of Harper Marie Photography for donating her photography services, Pat Farrell for assisting with our student volunteers, Cathy Waltz for organizing the Eat and Earns, Liz Paddack for assisting us that evening, and the countless adult volunteers who provided the treats and beverages for the dance. Thank you!

Lastly, a huge thank you goes to our amazing 6th, 7th, and 8th grade student volunteers who made the event possible with their time and creativity. The night was a success filled with stars and smiles because of all of you!  Thank you!! We look forward to next year!”
