Active and engaged learning is taking place all around the building!! Here are some highlights:
  • Miss Harter and Miss Tambling introduced the students to typing on keyboards. The students are practicing using the proper hand placement while typing
  • First grade students are learning about adjectives in grammar.  Then they designed tacky Christmas sweaters and used adjectives to describe them
  • Mrs. McGowan did a fun lesson about sELF esteem. The students decorated an elf and then proudly wrote about themselves.

  Family Service Opportunities

Thank you to the many families who donated toys for Marillac House. Over 100 toys were collected for children who would otherwise have little to nothing this Christmas. God bless you for your generosity!


St. James School uses the Emergency Closing Center to report a change in the school’s status, due to weather or any circumstance that would initiate the school closing. The Emergency Closing Center is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
You may check the status of St. Emily School in the following ways:

Be there for our first annual Daddy Daughter Dance!  Dads, be sure to mark your calendars for Friday, January 26th for a memorable night of dancing and fun!  We’ve lined up two Eat and Earn opportunities to help you plan your evening.  Panera and California Pizza Kitchen will donate a portion of your bill right back to SJS Parents’ Club.  Don’t Delay! Your RSVP is due by January 12.  Tickets will not be sold after January 12.

From The Office of Catholic Schools…Scholarship Granting Organizations You may begin to hear more about – or hear directly from – Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGO). SGOs are the organizations to which families will apply directly to in order to receive a tax credit scholarship. SGOs will be responsible for receiving and processing scholarship applications, and distributing the scholarships to eligible students.

There will likely be several SGOs in Illinois. The Archdiocese of Chicago has chosen Empower Illinois as its preferred SGO. Empower Illinois is a trusted partner with experienced employees who have managed a similar scholarship process in Florida. The Archdiocese is encouraging individuals and corporations interested in receiving a tax credit through this program to donate funds to Empower Illinois and designate those funds for students in Archdiocesan Catholic schools. School families are free to apply for scholarships through multiple SGOs, including the SGO to be created by the Big Shoulders Fund.

Below for your reference please find the information we know so far about Empower Illinois. We will continue to update you as more information becomes available regarding Empower Illinois, Big Shoulders Fund and other Illinois SGOs.

Empower Illinois Website: Expected Website Launch Date: Week of December 4 (applications will NOT be available at the time of the website launch) Expected Date to Receive Applications: The TENTATIVE date is January 2, 2018 Expected Date to Receive Donations: January 2, 2018

Tax Credit Scholarship Application Materials We will secure from the SGOs a list of all of the necessary documents families will need to apply for a tax credit scholarship as soon as it is available. In the meantime, based on what we know today, we believe families will need the following documents in order to apply for a tax credit scholarship:

  • 2016 tax return
  • Proof of residency (i.e. driver’s license or state ID)
  • Birth certificate or passport for student

Caritas and Phoenix Scholarship Recipient Clarification We realize there is some confusion regarding Caritas and Phoenix scholarship recipients applying for tax credit scholarships. To clarify, ONLY current Caritas and Phoenix scholarship recipients who qualify for a tax credit scholarship based on their household income level need to first apply for a tax credit scholarship through an SGO before they can apply to renew their Caritas or Phoenix scholarship. If recipients DO NOT qualify for a tax credit scholarship based on their household income level, they can apply to renew their Caritas or Phoenix scholarship as they have done in the past.
